Chris T introduction was very long and thus unrecordable, but did provide a thoughtful surrogate to the 5 min. Speaker.

5 min speaker

Malcolm Leeming led an entertaining Heads n Tails session where Heads fell for an unbelievable 8 sequences, meaning it was all over pretty quickly. And the one remaining standing at the end?  You guessed it-Graeme Barrell was declared the winner - though it was noted by some that his hands did not move from his sides throughout the eliminations.  Nevertheless a worthy recipient of the bottle of wine because of his smart non moves.

Alistair opened his evening regaling members with his ongoing water woes-that is to say a very high water table as a consequence of low lying property at bottom of a big hill with inadequate (council) drainage, resulting in firstly “pimples” which when pricked result in craters about his section. We look forward to the chapter meantime praying that his house doesn’t appear somewhere in China. On the up-his insurance company is coming to the party.

Murray Lobb (Mayor elect) announced results of last week s debate, 24 in favour of retaining Thursday’s, 5 against. Steph, lead for negatives acknowledged defeat, but one feels will have the final retribution -that is husband and for the affirmatives, Murray B. has it coming to him!

Doug Hooper Smith invited caravaners, motor homers and couples willing share shearers quarters over to the family farm at Waitahora-Sthn. Hawkes bay for a weekend of fun and daffodil picking ( for cancer fundraising) weekend. Its a beautiful place.

Chris T. Who was determined to play a major part in proceedings reminded us about the forthcoming Ride the (steam) Train -Paekakariki to Taihape -a fundraiser for eradication of Polio ; Sunday 4 September 2022 (Fathers Day) Tickets are selling well, do not miss out and book now. Mark Wheeler, District 9940 visits us 25 August to talk about the Regionalisation of Rotary. Other clubs to join us so best behaviour please!

Sergeant Tim Mikkelsen  within about 3 minutes managed to extract coin from every member, including Paul Adams who fessed up to dropping off Graeme B to the wrong house last Thursday . There were reports from an Avion Cres  resident of waking up to a strange man in their wardrobe on Friday morning.

Chris T then had the final say with another 5 minute speech for his parting thought.

The Pea n Ham soup was absolutely delicious and worthy of several helping. Followed up by perennial favourite corned beef and mustard sauce, Irish mashed spuds (they had green in them) and delicious salads things that even Roger would have enjoyed had he been there.

Another cracker evening at Kapiti Rotary.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE SPEAKER

Don Wallace spoke passionately about his role as a member of the New Zealand Emergency Response Unit of International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies -who would have known there was such a thing?

An important ingredient in the machinations of Red Cross directed from Switzerland his team are first responders to scope emergencies and deploy the considerable resources at the organisations disposal. Specifically ERU’s establish 1994, provide support or services where local facilities are destroyed, overwhelmed by need or do not exit, for Logistics, IT & Telecommunications (Dons particular talent) Water & Sanitation,Basic Health Care, Referral Hospital, Rapid Deployment Hospital, Relief and Base Camp. The IT & Telecom function is to establish communication experts and links to help ensure the smooth flow of information in the operation. It assists the host National Society with its communication systems. At present only American, Austrian, Finnish New Zealand and Spanish Red Cross have IT & Telecom ERU’s.

All this to top off a very busy and colourful working life in management consultancy which has taken him to numerous countries.

Don lives with his partner between residences in Wellington and Otaki.

All very interesting insight into the workings of a very professional international PO.
